EMPOWERING BRAZIL’S INDIGENOUS WOMEN

Regina Zelia Benites, a member of the Kaiowá people of Brazil, sits on the governing committee of Jaguapiru in the Indigenous Reserve of Dourado in Mato Grosso do Sul, home to 15,000 Indians. 40% of Brazil’s indigenous people live in extreme poverty and a quarter of all Indian children are underweight and stunted. The MDG-F’s work in Brazil focused on increasing the participation of indigenous people in public councils and national committees, particularly women.
